The Cannery was actually first built as a cannery (go figure) back in 1921. In 1999 The Cannery was almost torn down for new condo development before being saved as an important Newport landmark. Today The Cannery has come a long way from its original canning days and now sits as a beautiful dining location in the picturesque Newport harbor.
The Ahi Tuna Poke – a light but chunky tuna tartar to start. Mixed with heavenly California avocado that you scoop up with crunchy wonton chips.
Next up was something of our own creation – we ordered the crunchy roll but asked if they could place some eel on top. Our waiter was more than happy to oblige and within a short time presented us with this masterpiece.
It was deliciously perfect.
Any sushi lover would be proud.
We ate, sipped and chatted in the perfect Newport weather.
Topics of Dubai, future travels and of course when we would visit Newport again circled around the table.
Before long the mains arrived and we tucked in.
For Mr. Z’s Mama – The swordfish. Presented on top a bed of potato puree, roasted mushrooms, garlic and olives.
The amazing seafood dish – Jack’s Bouillabaisse – a hot sauce pan of a half lobster, scallops, clams, and market fish all slow cooked together.
Make sure to ask for extra bread to soak up all that saffron sauce.
For me -The Alaskan Halibut with couscous, tomato, toasted pinenuts and avocado all mixed together with herb yogurt emulsion.
We happily ate away as the sun sank.
By this time my fancy little cocktail was almost gone and the beautiful little flower was starting to emerge.
The only thing left to do was eat it!
It tasted just like a gummy candy. Which, of course, made this my new favorite cocktail ever.
Big thank you to Mr. Z’s mama for this spot on recommendation!
There were only more sweet things to come.
With the sun finally set it was time to light the birthday candle on my surprise chocolate fondant.
A creamy, rich treat that will satisfy any chocolate lover.
All in all a perfect ending to our USA trip. In the morning it was off to the airport to board our 16 hour flight on Emirates back to Dubai.
