My first day back in Portland I woke up to rain.
However, we were able to take advantage of the grey weather by warding it off with fresh warm doughnuts.
So naturally the next morning my mom and I armed with an umbrella (in the middle of July – welcome to Portland) headed up through the neighbourhood to Pips where of course, Tony was eagerly waiting for us.
We quickly ran inside, shook off the rain and welcomed the smell of fresh made doughnuts and rich coffees.
The doughnuts are tiny, perfectly bit size. We opted for four each. I tried their raw honey (locally provided) with Himalayan sea salt, the cinnamon and sugar, the nutella, and a special apricot and cherry.
But first, coffee and chai, which is also locally prepared and blended by the owners. But do be careful, the chai does pack a punch and might not be the classic ‘Portland chai’ you’re used to.
We collected our drinks and took a comfy seat in the window while we anxiously waited for our doughnuts.
Oh yes, it’s that good. Luckily my mom grabbed the camera in time to catch my expression after my first bite of a Pips doughnut.
While the Dirty Wu is definitely a fun one to try the natural honey with Himalayan sea salt was my favorite doughnut. The honey and salt doughnut is in fact so good its won awards here in Portland – trust me don’t miss out on this one.
I quickly took one last snap before we gobbled up the rest as I caught up on all of the latest Portland news that I had missed while in Dubai.
And like that, they were gone.
Even with the rain I couldn’t have asked for a better first morning in Portland. I was full and happy but surprisingly not weighed down the way you would normally expect to feel after a doughnut. These little guys are great and I’m sure I’ll find myself in Pips again before I leave.
If you want to have a stop in Pips too you can get their location and all other information from their Facebook page here.
